Outcome of deadly floods in Kelafo and Mustahil Districts in Gode zone
On Monday 30th October, 2006 a team of Ogaden Welfare & Development Association (OWDA) led by Mr. A/rizak Haji the Gode office manager has paid a visit to the affected Kelafo and Mustahil Districts in Gode zone where a horrific flood situation has been experienced during the Dyr heavy Rains recently in Somali Regional state.
During the visit for intervention, OWDA has distributed (1000) treated Mosquito nets to the most vulnerable families of the flood affected communities. Also given 100 litters of petrol for the two emergency Boats for rescuing the people in the water, in addition, secured 15 days of perdium payment for boat operators at Kelafo and Mustahil Woredas.
The streets of the town were muddy, pools of dirty and contaminating water have been seen everywhere. The crocodiles came out with the flood water attacking the people.
According to Kelafo Woreda and the local administration, the flood effects are as follows:
F 68% of the Woreda population has been affected remarkably
F 187 villages out of 213 villages in the Woreda have been affected
F About 16048 HH have been destroyed severely
F Lives of 28 persons have been claimed by
F About 5956 of Hector farm lands destroyed
F 59 water pumps damaged severely
F 400 cattle heads have been led to death
F 563 goats similarly led to death
F 52 donkeys killed by the flood
F Approximately 4600 poultry taken by the flood
There are other villages that locate inaccessible areas and these villages are under emergency.
